先日、私の友だちがニュージランドからアメリカに私に会いに来てくれたのですが、そのときに彼女と私のアメリカ人の友だちとである話題について盛り上がりました。私たちは、英語圏の間での英語の使われ方の違いと 下着 & パンツ の呼び方の違いについて話したんです。ニュージーランドのほどんどの女性は”panties”という呼び方を嫌いますし、私のイギリス人の友だちなんて「パンティーは英語の中で一番嫌いな言葉よ!」と言っていたほどです。何故だかわからないのですが、私たちブリティッシュイングリッシュを話す者として”panties”という表現は少し変態的で気持ち悪い感じに聞こえるんです。アメリカ人が”panties”と言うのを聞くと、発音のせいかもっと気持ち悪く聞こえちゃうんです!!でも、アメリカ人にとってこてこの単語は、普段みんな普通に使っているものなんです。

アメリカ人にとっては古臭い感じに聞こえるかもしれないですが、私たちニュージーランド人は普段、女性の下着を”knickers”と呼んでいます。オーストラリア人とニュージーランド人は”undies” or even “grundies”(男性、女性両方に使えます)と言うこともあります。イギリスでは日本と同じように “pants”と言うみたいです。私にとって “pants”と言う単語はズボンを連想させるので、イギリスに行くときは少し混乱します。私のニュージーランド人の友だちが出かける前に彼女のイギリス人のルームメイトにこんなことを言ってしまったら…「今日、パンツはいていこうかな～」ニュージランドではパンツはズボンのことで、イギリスでパンツは下着のことなので、これを聞いたイギリス人のルームメイトは「頼むから下着だけで外出しないでよっ!」と思うでしょうね。

同じ英語と言っても、スラングや話し言葉の中では国によって色々違いがあります。でもたいていの場合、お互いに理解し合えます。私はニュージランド人で今アメリカにいますが、今の所問題はありません。

ここで紹介してるスラングのほとんどは全世界共通のものばかりです。でも、もしここの国限定でしか使われていないなどがあればそのつど紹介していきたいと思います☆

I had a funny conversation with my friend from NZ visiting the US and some of our American friends.  We were talking about differences in English between countries and we were talking about knickers/pants/panties/undies (depending on what country you are in). Most NZ women do not like the word “panties”, I also have an English friend who says that “panties is her most hated word in the English language!!!  To us it sounds somehow perverted (or “icky” as my friend puts it).  In an American accent panties sounds even worse to us!  But for Americans it is the usual word they use.

In NZ we use knickers for women’s underpants – which probably sounds old-fashioned to Americans.  We also (as do Australians) use “undies” or even “grundies”- this is good for men’s or women’s underwear.  In England they use “pants” like in Japan.  Pants to me means trousers though so makes for some confusion when visiting.  My NZ friend would say to her room-mates in England when getting ready to go out: “I am wearing pants tonight,” and they would laugh, and say that they hoped she would wear more than that!

There are a lot of differences in slang and colloquial English between countries, but mostly we understand each other.  In most situations here in the States, they have understood me.

The English we study here, is mainly based on slang that we would use all around the world, and I will say if it is country-specific.
