James Spader, the wonderful Alan Shore on Boston Legal, is amazing in his role here as the friend – it is worth watching the movie just for his performance.  I highly recommend this classic ’80s movie that explores sexual desire.

この本は、中経出版からの出版で、値段は1200円、中身は190ページです。

この本の著者:

• David Thayne:米国出身、数多くの英会話書籍を執筆し、翻訳・通訳から英会話学校経営まで多方面で活躍している。
• 長崎 祐子: 日本で大学を卒業後カナダに留学、ファッションマーケティングを学ぶ。現地情報誌のインタビュアーライターとして活躍。帰国後は幅広い執筆活動を展開している。

この本の特徴:

この本の値段は、CDを含んでいないわりには少し割高な気がしますが、本の中にはカタカナで英単語の発音が記入されています。(カタカナ英語を身につけてしまう気がしてネイティブスピーカーの私の個人的な意見ですが、こういうスタイルはあまり好きではありません)　この本の構成は一つの日本語表現に対して4つの英語表現の例が挙げられており、その単語に関した説明も載っている。巻末にインデックス(見出し)や単語集などはついていません。

批評:

この本は他のこの手の本と比べると恋愛・デートの分野に的を絞って英語を学べるでしょう。この本は英語で恋愛がしたい女性をターゲットに書かれています。本の構成(1つの日本語表現に対して4つの例文を挙げその語の説明も表記)はとてもいいのですが、この内容が2ページに渡って表記されているので(2ページで1つの表現が学べるようになっている)紹介されている語量は少ないです。

今本は恋愛の会話を紹介しており、スラングに的を絞っている訳ではないですが、使われている英語は自然な表現で完璧です。一つ欠点をあげるとしたら、時々少し変な表現が混じっている点です。おそらくその原因は、この本は女性向けなのに書いているのはアメリカ人男性だからではないでしょうか。”You’re not very good at this.” (あなたセックス上手いわね) なんて私は絶対に一生言いません…。私だったらもっと丁寧な表現を選ぶと思います。

英語バージョン

二人だけの愛の英会話 is a 190-page book published by Chukei and costs ￥1200.  It is written by David Thayne and Yuko Nagasaki.

Features:
It is a reasonably expensive book as it does not have a CD included in the price although there is katakana help for the pronunciation (which I personally don’t like as you end up sounding like you are speaking in Katakana English).  The structure of the book is to have a question with four possible answers along with a language explanation.  There is no index or vocabulary list.

Organisation/Topics

Review:
This book keeps to the subject much more than other books, looking at only the subject of love and dating and does not go beyond this which is great for focused study.  It is targeted at women wanting to date in English.  The format (one question, four possible answers and the language note) is original and useful but as each question-answers-language note set is spread over 2 pages it means that there is not a huge amount of content covered in the book.

The quality of the English is perfect, the phrases throughout are natural, although it is not focusing on slang but English conversation in dating.  The only criticism is that some of the answers are funny, perhaps because they are for women but written by a man!  I would definitely never say to a guy in bed: “You’re not very good at this.”  I think I would be more polite, but it is real English (and funny!).

Hip Hop Slang

この本の著者:

Stephen Chasey :1972年米国生まれ。日本語翻訳家。テキサス大学オースティン港でアジア学と日本語学を学ぶ。

• Eibun Tokushu : 1971年生まれ。テキサス大学オースティン校で建築工学と構造学を学ぶ。構造分析、設計エンジニアを経て、現在は同大学にてコンピューターサイエンスと数学を研究中。

ヒップホップスラング―セックスからインターネットまで は198ページで構成されており、952円でKKベストセラーズから出版されています。

構成・内容:

付属のCDはありませんが、本の価格は非常に購入しやすいものとなっています。巻末には語句の見出しがあり、紹介されているスラングの横には単語の「汚さ」のレベルと種類を表すマークがついています。

この本はスラングを紹介しそのスラングに対する説明と例文をあげるスタイルで学習できるように構成されています。コロムや映画の決め台詞などを紹介したページも各章ごとにあります。

総合批評:　

この本は私がみてきたスラングの本の中で一番お勧めできる本です。もしスラング本選びで迷っていたらこれを試してみてはどうでしょうか？8年前に第一紙が発行されたのですが、掲載されているスラングには古臭い感じのものはなく、どこの英語圏でも共通して使われているものばかりでした。紹介されているスラングが、ヒップホップスラングかどうかはわかりませんが、どっちかというとこの本のカバーにも書かれているフレーズ”American Street Slang”(映画や町で実際に使われているスラング)の方が本書の内容に近い気がします。

また、本書ではたくさんのスラングが紹介されており、それぞれに対話方式の例文がついているので、実際にネイティブスピーカーがどのようにして普段の生活の中でそのスラングを使用しているのか非常にわかりやすいです。一つ欠点をあげるとしたら、発音を確認するためのCDが付いていないという点です。少し古い映画からですが、 Pulp Fiction 、Reservoir Dogs (お勧めです!たくさんスラングが出てきます) や the Godfather といった映画のせりふからスラングを学ぶというのは英語を学ぶうえでとってもいい方法だといえます。

198ページしかないのでこのウェブサイトのようにスラングを色々な角度で深いところまで学ぶことは難しいですが(笑)、たくさんのスラングをいい方法で学べるし私の中ではかなりお勧めの一冊です

Features:
This book does not have a CD (which is a real shame) but the price reflects this – very reasonable.  It has a full index (English only) at the back of the book for handy reference and it also has a rude rating index for some of the slang covered.  Mostly it introduces the slang and then gives an example dialogue.  There are also cultural notes throughout the book as well as example dialogues from movies.

Review:
This would have to be my favorite of all of the slang/conversation books I looked at, if you can only buy one, buy this one!  Although it was first published 8 years ago, the language it covers is still current and easily understandable in most of the English-speaking world.  I don’t know that it is actually Hip Hop slang, I think that is more clever marketing, it is more “American Street Slang” as it says on the cover and is the type of English you will hear on TV and in the movies.

There are plenty of rude words in the topics covered, and having the dialogues as well means it is easy to understand how they are used in conversation.  My only criticism is that there is no CD for pronunciation practice.   They also use dialogue excerpts from popular (although a little old now) movies such as Pulp Fiction (great funky movie!!!), Reservoir Dogs (recommended- lots of swearing) and the Godfather (classic mob movie series), to support the slang studied.

There is a handy index at the back, and a small amount of the slang covered has a rating system so you know how rude it is.  It isn’t as in depth as our website of course – being only 198 pages, but it does well to cover many subjects in some depth.  Highly recommended!

これで英語で恋愛できる (小学館文庫)は、650円でアマゾンで販売されたおり、文庫本サイズで350ページの内容となっています。著者の井上一馬氏は、比較文学を専攻し、英語学習に関する書籍の執筆や海外文学の翻訳を手掛けています。

この本の特徴: 1つのテーマに対していくつかの英語例文がついているといった方式の本です。この本にはCD、インデックス(見出し)、単語集などはついてきません。

構成・内容: 人の性格、恋愛、占い、失恋、エチケット、美容院、レストラン、結婚、妊娠、喧嘩、週末の過ごし方の11つの章から構成されています。 各章は、いくつかの場面ごとに、日本語の表現に対応した英語表現がリスト化されています。

批評: この本は英語を母国語としたネイティブスピーカーによって書かれたものでないので、文法的には大丈夫でも、私たちネイティブスピーカーが普段使わない不自然(かしこまりすぎていたり昔の表現方法だったり)な表現が多々見受けられました。

不自然な表現の例:

• “I can’t stand her snobbism.”(お高い女は嫌いだ)  “snobbism”はそもそも辞書を引いても出てこない存在する単語ではありません…。まあでも言いたいことはわかるのですが、ネイティブスピーカーの私ならならこういいます　→”She’s a snobby bitch/cow.”(彼女はお高くとまったビッチだ) それか、 “She’s such a snob” (彼女は何かと色々鼻にかけて話すんだよね)　“snob”はそれ自体が既にネガティブな単語なのでそれを使うだけで聞き手は「あ～この人～のこと嫌いなんだ…」とすぐにわかるはずです。

• “He is indecent,” という単語を筆者は単に”下品な”というニュアンスで使っていますが、ネイティブスピーカーはこの“indecent”という単語を聞くと、どちらかというと性的に下品でみだらな感じを想像してしまいます。

文法的に間違っているところ

Unfortunately I can’t find a lot to say that is good about this book, the main problem with this book is that you can tell it has not been written by a native speaker (it is possible to do this with a good editor, but Mr Inoue does not seem to have this.  Although grammatically correct, a lot of the English covered is not what we would use in spoken English.  It sounds overly formal, unnatural or old-fashioned.

A couple of examples of this are:

• He uses the phrase: “I can’t stand her snobbism.” (snobbism is not even a real word, but we would understand it) when we would be more likely to say: “She’s a snobby bitch/cow.” or even just “She’s such a snob” (snob is a negative word, so the listener already understands that you don’t like it).
• He introduces the phrase: “He is indecent,” meaning “He is coarse.” but we are much more likely to think of indecent meaning sexually indecent (like he isn’t wearing any pants!).

Then there were a number of grammatically incorrect phrases as well including:

• P142  I’ve lost my weight -> I’ve lost weight
• P169  I know very well about… -> I don’t know much about…
• P152  I haven’t noticed…-> I didn’t notice…
• P140  My boyfriend gave me.  -> My boyfriend gave me them.

So if you are thinking about buying this book, be careful about using the English.  It might be better for your study of written English  rather than spoken English.

男と女の英会話の評価

男と女の英会話は、2007年に西東社から出版され、値段は1500円、中身は223ページです。著者は K. Scott Johnson と K.Sarah Sasaki 。

この本の特徴:

この本にはCDがついており、巻末には英語フレーズと日本語訳のインデックス(見出し)がついています。一つのテーマについて6～10のフレーズが1ページに紹介されており、解説も記載されている。どれもフレーズで紹介されており、会話調の例文は載っていないが、クエッション、アンサー的な短い会話文はたまに見うけられた。また、デートにおいてのアドバイスや恋愛実体験なども載っている。

批評:

私はこの本を読んでみて、この本は、外人女性をゲットしようとしている日本人男性向けの本のようなイメージを受けました。スラングの本というよりはデートのときの会話を練習する感じの内容となっています。広い範囲の状況をカバーしており、使われている英語も自然で、外人の恋人をゲットしようとしている人のためには非常にいい本であると言えます。著者の実体験などが紹介されたコーナーは非常に興味深く、英語だけではなく文化的なことも楽しく学ぶことができそうです。

Features

This book has a CD, an index of English phrases and the Japanese translations at the back of the book.  Each theme has one page of phrases (between 6 and 10 phrases) and then a page of dating advice.  There are no sample dialogues, although some of the phrases that are questions have sample answers.

Organisation/Topics Covered

Review
This book is aimed at men wanting to pick up women – it is not just a slang book but more a conversation book for men wanting to date and have sex with women who speak English.  It covers a great variety of situations and is thorough.  The English is very natural and could be very helpful if you were wanting to pick up and sleep with women. Overall this book is good value for money and covers the dating topic thoroughly.

この本は、お手頃価格の1600円で、中身は248ページあり、CDも付いてきて、多種多様なスラングをカバーしています。5年前に出版されて以来、現在では第18版が書店にならんでいることからもわかるように、非常に人気があるようです。

この本の特徴

• リスニング用のCDが付いている。
• 本の最後にこの本で使用されたボキャブラリーが直ぐに探せるようにインデックスが付いている。
• 携帯メールやインターネットでのチャット時に使えるような略語の表がついている。
• 掲載されているスラングがどれほど失礼なものか一目でわかるように星印が単語の横に付けられている。
• 1ページにつき2つずつ単語が紹介されており、カタカナ表記で英語の発音が掲載されている。
• 1単語につき1つの例文がついてくる。CDには大部分の例文が録音されているのでリスニングの練習になる。
• 付属のCDを聞いて発音の練習ができる。(カタカナだけを見て覚えるより音から覚えた方が良い)
• ここに出てくる単語をどれぐらい暗記できているかを確認できるような練習問題などは付いていないが、あなたが、この本にザーと目を通してみて新しい単語だけピックアップし、単語力を増やしたいだけなら問題はないだろう。

構成・内容

• 恋愛、ほめる・けなす表現、感情表現、挨拶・応答、生活用品・場所、人の性格・体、人間関係、インターネット用語の8つの章で構成されている。
• 各章は30～50個のスラング表現とその日本語訳を会話文形式の例文とともに紹介している。

この本で使用されているスラングについて

この本で紹介されているほとんどのスラングは実際に道ばたや英語圏のテレビ番組やドラマなどでも耳にするものですが、その反面、一部のスラングはあまり広く使われていないもののような印象も受けました。(英語が母国語の私の友達たちにも確認済)おそらく地域独特なものや年齢層の違いにもよって一部の環境で使われているものと思います。このうちのいくつかに、おそらくネイティブでも中には理解できない人もいるかもしれないといったものもありました。私の父が使いそうな少し古い表現もいくつかみうけられました。

この本に掲載されているが、実際はそういう意味ではあまり使われていない英語スラングを下にあげてみました。 ( オンライン辞書UrbanDictionary.com でもチェックしたのですがのっていませんでした…ということはやはり次にあげるスラングは本に載っている意味では広く使われていないってことですよね)

• ubba dubba, deficky, gah roo, waggot :この本で紹介されている他の意味では使いますが…。
• short-timer: これも普段違う意味で使います。この本ではこのフレーズの意味は”早漏”と出ていますが、そういうふうに使うなんて一度も聞いたことがありません。間違って使うとヤバイことになりそうですね…
• fat ass: これはそのままで”デブ”、”ふとっちょ”と言う意味では使いますがこの本では別の意味で紹介されています。
• bawa, flipper…などなど。

古臭い表現

tip top、spifffing、 neck、 stud、 see you later alligator、 bread and eager beaver、 “my foot“より”my ass“の方が今ではよく使われています。ここにあげたものは私の父の世代が使うかもしれない古臭い表現ばかりです。でも私のブログにあるレトロスラングコーナーには丁度良いかもしれませんね!何個かここから盗もうかな♪

ちょっと不自然なスラングは上にリストアップしておいたので、それにさえ気をつければ、この本を使って広範囲な場面で使えるスラングを修得できるはず♪　CDで発音練習も出来ますしね☆
