このシリーズでは英語を母国語として話すネイティブスピーカーが個々のお気に入りのスラングとその意味をビデオの中で説明してくれるといったものです。

第3回目のスラングビデオは、Sam (11才) とAriana (9才)のお気に入りのスラング“What’s up?”の紹介です。“What’s up? “は “How are you?”の代わりに使えるフレーズですが、もう少しカジュアルな響きで、”What has been happening in your life?”"What’s new?”(最近どうよ、何か(新しいこと)あった?)といった意味です。

ネイティブスピーカーは、この“What’s up?”を非常に良く使います。例えば、ルームメイトやクラスメイトと家や学校の廊下ですれちがった時などに、“What’s up?”(この場合は「おう!」といった感じで軽い挨拶です。)と言ったり、友達に「何か相談したいことがあるの…」と呼び出されて“What’s up?”(どうしたの?)と言えたりと、“What’s up?”は、海外で暮らしていると一日に何回も耳にするスラングなのです。

日本人が良くする間違いで、気を付けなければいけない点が、この質問への答え方です

“How are you?”と似ている意味だからといって”I’m fine.”などと答えるのは間違いです。“What’s up?”は、「元気?/調子はどう?」というニュアンスより「何か新しいことあった?」と言う意味が強いので下のように答えてみてください。 スラングなので目上の人やあまり親しくない人には使わないように注意しましょう!!

“Not much.” 、 “Nothing much.” 「う～ん。特に何にもないよ。」

“The usual.” 「特に何もなく、いつも通りだね。」

“Just working.” や “Just studying.”「ただ働いてる(勉強してる)。」など 最近何をしているかを答える。

“What’s up?” 同じ質問を聞き返す。廊下などで友達とすれちがった時などは「おう!」と言った軽いニュアンスなので、A:「What’s up?」B:「What’s up?」と同じ質問を反復してそれだけで終わる場合もあります。

Ariana:            Hi I’m Ariana.
Sam:               And I’m Sam!
Ariana:            Our favorite slang is
Ariana & Sam: What’s up?
Sam:               You use it anytime you see someone you know.
What’s up *sis?
Ariana:           Nothing much *bro.
Sam:              Yeah!

アリアナ:            こんにちは。アリアナです。

サム:                 そして、サムです!

アリアナ:            私たちのお気に入りのスラングは、

アリアナ&サム:   “What’s up?”で～す。

サム:                 このスラングは知り合いの人と出会った時にいつでも使えます。やあ、最近どう?

サム:                 イエーイ!

*Sis: sister　妹、仲の良い女友達を呼ぶ時にも使えます。
*Bro: brother　弟、仲の良い男友達を呼ぶ時にも使えます。

英語には”Hi, how are you?”「やあ元気?」の他にも様々な挨拶の方法があります。来週のポストで紹介しますね。

英語バージョン

This is the third Native Street Slang video looking at people’s favorite English slang.

This time we have Sam (11) and Ariana (9) and they are demonstrating their favorite slang phrase: What’s up? You use What’s up? instead of How are you? It is very casual and means: What has been happening in your life?  The usual answer is “Not much.” or “Nothing much.” or you could answer by saying: “The usual.”  meaning that life has been usual.  Or you could try explaining what’s going on in your life: “Just working.” or “Just studying.” are quite common.

In English there is no “one pattern” of greeting.  There are many ways you can say “Hi, how are you?” and I will look at them next week.

My name is Malcolm.  I am a Kiwi, I’m from New Zealand.  And I like the word malarkey.  It’s very polite but it’s a nice word, when people are faffing around not doing anything,  just being really inefficient:  There’s a lot of malarkey going on.

I work as a wilderness guide and my clients quite often when they are getting ready for a trip, they just don’t know what to do, they dither, they dither, and they flip flop and I tell them: “Hey, there is a lot of malarkey going on, let’s get a move on and get off into the hills.”

Finally I have another video in the series: Native Street Slang.  This is a friend of mine Malcolm who loves to use the word malarkey.  It is a bit old-fashioned and means “nonsense” and can be used when people are wasting time – “Stop all this malarkey.”

It can also be about information being nonsense, with Wiktionary gives this malarkey example: I decided it was a bunch of malarkey and stopped reading about halfway through.

Q. Could you tell us what you are doing now? 今何の仕事をしているか教えてくれますか?

I work right now for a place called Espresso Vivace in Seattle, I’ve been working there for about two and a half years.  I’m a professional barrista there.  Um…and it saved my life.  I love my job, I love the people I interact with on a daily basis.  I escaped stocking grocery shelves overnight.

Because of this job, it allowed me something to be a professional at, and an artist at the same time.  I really love doing latte art.  It’s just been another medium to express myself artistically.

僕は今シアトルにある”Espresso Vivace”というカフェで働いているんだ。そこで働き始めて2年半になるよ。僕はそこでプロのバリスタなんだ。この仕事の前に夜中にスーパーの品だしをしていたんだけど、今の仕事のおかげで僕の人生が変わったよ。僕はこの仕事が大好きで、日々交流があるお客さん達も大好きだよ。

I have a flickr website, its Flickr.com/photos/naturallyabel – abel spelt A-B-E-L like my middle name.  And um…there’s something about the…ah…I always break it down into three parts: it’s a science, it’s an art and it’s a skill. I’ve been blessed enough to take this to other places,  I went on a trip to Puerto Rico, this job brought me to my homeland.   I got to show people in Puerto Rico how to make coffee.  On a daily basis it challenges me, it allows me to meet a wide variety of different people.  It’s something that I’ve considered making my long-term career -  of owning a coffee shop one day.

Q. You speak two languages, could you tell us about that?

Yeah, I’m Puerto Rican, I speak Spanish.  My mother made it a point before I went to Kindergarten that she would speak nothing but Spanish to me.  And it benefited me greatly.  To this day, lots of jobs are offered to me because of the fact that I speak two languages.  Spanish in the United States is one of the more widely used second languages, though numbers now indicate that it is going to be the most widely spoken foreign language, so it’s exciting, it helps, it allows me to communicate with, exactly that, twice as many people.  So it’s great, I love it.

Q. So you live in Seattle, how long have you been here?

A. I’ve lived in Seattle now for a total of eight years.  I moved here when I was about 15 years old.

Q. What’s the best thing about living in Seattle?

A. Well it’s summertime and lately my favorite thing about living in Seattle is being able to go down to the baseball games.  Safeco field gives you really really easy access to some of the major league baseball players, and you have the opportunity to get autographs and speak to them, unlike a lot of other parks that I’ve visited in other cities where it is very difficult to get that ah, old-school intimacy that baseball has had.

Um, the weather here tends to be just beautiful during the summer.  We earn it though, going through about eight and a half months or so of some serious rain.  But, um, and even then it’s not so bad.  I really enjoy the weather here when it’s gorgeous, there’s nothing better.  Lots of outdoor-activity-motivated people to go and have fun with: frisbee, hiking, cycling.  You can find it all here.

This is an interview with Christopher “Nicely” Abel Alameda, we posted yesterday.  He starred in our eBook: fuck.  He originally lived in New York but now works as a barrista in Seattle.  Here is the transcript and translation of the interview:

ん～。夏の間はシアトルはただただ綺麗ですっごくいいですよ。良い天気の季節も味わえなきゃね! 何ていったって後の8ヶ月半ほぼ毎日雨だからね…。でもまっ、そんなに悪いもんじゃないけどね。天気の最高な日はすっごくテンションあがるよ。この天気にかなうものは他にないぐらいだよ。フリスビーを投げて遊んだり、ハイキングやサイクリングしたりってアウトドアを楽しみに外に出るんだ。シアトルならそういうアウトドアのアクティビティーをどこでも見つけられるよ 。

このスラングは、つま先をぶつけたときや、渋滞中に車が割り込んできたとき、何にしても俺をイライラさせる状況で使うんだ。

Jesus Fucking Christ!

Jesus Christ!はブライアンが説明しているように、イライラしている時やムッとさせられるような状況の時に使うスラングです。宗教心のある人が周りにいない限り、このスラングは大体の場合どこででも使えす。fuckingと間に入れるだけでこのスラングの意味がもっと失礼なものになりますので注意してくださいね。職場やお友だちなどの両親の前では使わないほうがいいですよ。

Jesus Christ is a common swearword, used as Brian says: when you are frustrated or annoyed – unless the people you are with are very religious, you can say that almost anytime.  Adding in fucking makes it ruder, so be careful who you use it around.  Best not to use it at work or around someone’s parents!
