長崎祐子: 日本で大学を卒業後カナダに留学、ファッションマーケティングを学ぶ。現地情報誌のインタビュアーライターとして活躍。帰国後は幅広い執筆活動を展開している。

この本の特徴:

この本の値段は、CDを含んでいないわりには少し割高な気がしますが、本の中にはカタカナで英単語の発音が記入されています。(カタカナ英語を身につけてしまう気がしてネイティブスピーカーの私の個人的な意見ですが、こういうスタイルはあまり好きではありません)　この本の構成は一つの日本語表現に対して4つの英語表現の例が挙げられており、その単語に関した説明も載っている。巻末にインデックス(見出し)や単語集などはついていません。

批評:

この本は他のこの手の本と比べると恋愛・デートの分野に的を絞って英語を学べるでしょう。この本は英語で恋愛がしたい女性をターゲットに書かれています。本の構成(1つの日本語表現に対して4つの例文を挙げその語の説明も表記)はとてもいいのですが、この内容が2ページに渡って表記されているので(2ページで1つの表現が学べるようになっている)紹介されている語量は少ないです。

今本は恋愛の会話を紹介しており、スラングに的を絞っている訳ではないですが、使われている英語は自然な表現で完璧です。一つ欠点をあげるとしたら、時々少し変な表現が混じっている点です。おそらくその原因は、この本は女性向けなのに書いているのはアメリカ人男性だからではないでしょうか。”You’re not very good at this.” (あなたセックス上手いわね) なんて私は絶対に一生言いません…。私だったらもっと丁寧な表現を選ぶと思います。

英語バージョン

二人だけの愛の英会話 is a 190-page book published by Chukei and costs ￥1200. It is written by David Thayne and Yuko Nagasaki.

Features:
It is a reasonably expensive book as it does not have a CD included in the price although there is katakana help for the pronunciation (which I personally don’t like as you end up sounding like you are speaking in Katakana English). The structure of the book is to have a question with four possible answers along with a language explanation. There is no index or vocabulary list.

Organisation/Topics

Review:
This book keeps to the subject much more than other books, looking at only the subject of love and dating and does not go beyond this which is great for focused study. It is targeted at women wanting to date in English. The format (one question, four possible answers and the language note) is original and useful but as each question-answers-language note set is spread over 2 pages it means that there is not a huge amount of content covered in the book.

The quality of the English is perfect, the phrases throughout are natural, although it is not focusing on slang but English conversation in dating. The only criticism is that some of the answers are funny, perhaps because they are for women but written by a man! I would definitely never say to a guy in bed: “You’re not very good at this.” I think I would be more polite, but it is real English (and funny!).

男と女の英会話の評価

男と女の英会話は、2007年に西東社から出版され、値段は1500円、中身は223ページです。著者は K. Scott Johnson と K.Sarah Sasaki 。

この本の特徴:

この本にはCDがついており、巻末には英語フレーズと日本語訳のインデックス(見出し)がついています。一つのテーマについて6～10のフレーズが1ページに紹介されており、解説も記載されている。どれもフレーズで紹介されており、会話調の例文は載っていないが、クエッション、アンサー的な短い会話文はたまに見うけられた。また、デートにおいてのアドバイスや恋愛実体験なども載っている。

批評:

私はこの本を読んでみて、この本は、外人女性をゲットしようとしている日本人男性向けの本のようなイメージを受けました。スラングの本というよりはデートのときの会話を練習する感じの内容となっています。広い範囲の状況をカバーしており、使われている英語も自然で、外人の恋人をゲットしようとしている人のためには非常にいい本であると言えます。著者の実体験などが紹介されたコーナーは非常に興味深く、英語だけではなく文化的なことも楽しく学ぶことができそうです。

This book has a CD, an index of English phrases and the Japanese translations at the back of the book. Each theme has one page of phrases (between 6 and 10 phrases) and then a page of dating advice. There are no sample dialogues, although some of the phrases that are questions have sample answers.

Organisation/Topics Covered

Review
This book is aimed at men wanting to pick up women – it is not just a slang book but more a conversation book for men wanting to date and have sex with women who speak English. It covers a great variety of situations and is thorough. The English is very natural and could be very helpful if you were wanting to pick up and sleep with women. Overall this book is good value for money and covers the dating topic thoroughly.

Where is a good place to meet people? I get asked that question a lot. People are always wanting to know the best place to go to meet their next partner.

As you know I am living in the States at the moment and I am surprised at how much more forward guys are here. At home, I might get guys I don’t know talking to me in a bar or club, but here it might also happen at a bus stop or in a park. These Americans are not shy! They seem much more confident here.

Where do you think is a good place to meet people?

Some possible ways to meet new people are:

At work (or University if you are studying)
When you are out (at a bar or club)
Through friends
Online
On a blind date
Through your hobbies (a class, the gym etc)
Just by chance (like my examples – at a park or a bus stop or even shopping)
