I really like a guy at work.  We have been friends for 2 years, and I think there is chemistry between us.  I want to ask him out, but I am worried about our friendship.  What do you think?  How should I ask him out?

Dear Risa,

You think this guy at work has the x-factor and you want to ask him out.  Do it!!!  If he says “no”, you will only feel embarrassed for a couple of weeks and it will stop you dreaming about him.  If he says “yes”, it could be an exciting date.  I think friends make the best lovers.
The best way to ask him out is to ask him to something you know he likes doing.
If he likes movies: “Would you like to go to The Lord of the Rings this weekend?”
If he likes Italian food: “ Can I take you to my favorite Italian restaurant next week?”
If you are shy, you could get a bit drunk and ask him, or try texting or e-mailing him.

Here is what not to talk about on your first date!  Check out this You Tube clip – it is a take off of a MasterCard ad.  It uses quite a lot of English slang words, including blow job!  I will go through all the slang in more detail next week and give you ways to use it.

初デートの心得

• 初デートでは、夕食を家で食べるなどといった、相手を家にあがらせるようなことはしないこと。家にあがるという事はあなたがSEXをOKしているとも取られかねないし、もし何度かデートを重ねても相手の事が好きになれなかったら、後々面倒なことになるので家には誘わないほうが良い。
• 夏ならビーチなどに散歩に出かけると良い。人ごみにまみれて逃げ出すことも可能ですしね!
• いつでも上手くいかなかった時の為に途中で抜けられるような口実を用意しておくこと。友達に会わないといけないとか、仕事を終わらせないといけないなど。
• バーで出会った男性とそのまま家に帰らないように。その代わりに名刺や電話番号をもらうとよい。
• 出張(旅行)中に出会いがあった場合は、その相手が結婚しているか必ず先に確認する事。単刀直入に聞くことが大切!
• パソコンのサイトでの出会いの場合、初デートはカフェなどがベスト。相手が少しワイルドなタイプの人でも混みあったカフェなら安心です。一杯のコーヒーなら相手が退屈な人でも長居をしなくてすみますしね!

今日は昨日とは反対に、デートのお誘いを断る方法を紹介したいと思います。 下のフレーズはバーなどで誘われて断りたい時にも使えますよ。

先週のポストでも書いた通り、デートに誘うのはすごく勇気がいる事なのです!!相手を傷つけないように慎重に断って下さいね

大抵、こういったスチエーションの場合、人は、”white lies“(礼儀的な・相手を傷つけない為の嘘)をよく使います本当のことを直球で伝えるより、相手を傷つけないように嘘をつくことも時には大切なことですよね。”white lies”についてはまた来週のポストで深く見ていきましょう

相手を気遣って「いいえ」 と言いたい時は…

Thanks, but I’m busy. ありがとう、でも私、忙しいの。

Sorry, I have a boyfriend. ごめんなさい、彼氏がいるの。

I’d love to, but I’m moving to Alaska. すごく行きたいけど、でも私、アラスカに引っ越すの。

Sure, I’ll call you when I’m free. もちろん、今度電話するね。（絶対しないけど）

And today we look at English slang and phrases on how to reply to someone asking you for a date and you want to say “no”.  Remember to be kind, it takes a huge amount of courage to ask someone out on a date!  Often we use “white lies” to say no as they are easier on people’s egos than the truth.  I will do a post on “white lies” next week.
