初めてのデートでは会話を世間話や雑談でなんとか続かせることが大切。それって日本語でさえ難しいのに英語ならなおさらですよね～。あなたの面白い話で会話をリードすることができれば、相手に”この人、楽しくてチャーミングで最高!”なんて思わせることができるかもしれないですよ。

Questions are Key　”質問” がキーポイント
沢山の質問を相手にすることは会話をスムーズにキープできるスモールトークにつながります。また、あなたが相手に興味があるということを示すのも大事です。軽くて楽しい話題にして、あまりにもプライベートな話、エッチな話、政治の話は避けましょうね。

良い例: What kind of music do you like?　どんな音楽が好き?
悪い例: How big are your tits?　　胸のサイズは何カップ?

What / How / Where / Who / When / Which ～?
これらを用いた質問を”Open Questions”と言います。これらは質問を受けた者が”Yes”"No”だけで答えられない質問形式なので、会話が長続きします。

先週のデートに付いてのポストで軽く”white lies“について触れ、昨日のポストでこのフレーズの意味を詳しく見ていきました。今日は、”white lies”を使える状況とその例をあげていきたいと思います英語圏でこういった相手の気持ちを思ってつく小さな嘘は文化的に受け入れられることです

見た目を聞かれた時に使える”white lie”の例文

A: Does my ass look big in this dress? このドレス着るとお尻大きく見えるかな?
B: No not at all, your ass looks tiny!　そんなことないよ。君のお尻は小さいって!

A: Do you like my new haircut?　髪きったんだけど私の新しい髪型どう?
B: It’s great!　すっごいいいよ!

何かの行いについて返答する時に使える”white lie”の例文

A: It was fun at Karaoke last night, did you like it when I sung “My Way”. 昨夜のカラオケは楽しかったな～俺が歌った”My Way”って曲よかった?
B: Yeah, you were great. うん。よかったよ。

A: Did you like my cooking?　私の料理どうだった?
B: Fantastic! 最高だったよ!

このように、大体の”white lies”は、相手の気持ちを思ってつくとっても小さな嘘です。日本でも同じようなことしますか?

先週のデートに付いてのポストで軽く”white lies”について触れました。今日はこのフレーズの意味をもう少し深くみていきましょう

アーバン英英辞書で”White lies”の意味は、

white lie: a lie with good intentions　故意につく嘘

Q: How do I look in this dress?　このドレス私に似合うかな?
A: Uh… you look good… う～ん。。。似合ってるよ…。

また、他の辞書では、white lie 名詞 : an unimportant lie 些細な嘘(気を利かしてつく嘘)

そう…この単語の大体の感じは掴めましたか?　“white lie”とは、誰かの気持ちを尊重し、故意につく小さな罪のない嘘のことです。

“white lies”を最大限に利用できる英語例文を、明日のポストで紹介しますね

英語バージョン

We looked very briefly at white lies in last week’s post on English dating language.
This week let’s look at what they really mean.

Urban dictionary defines white lie as:

white lie: a lie with good intentions

Q: How do I look in this dress?
A: Uh… you look good…

So what does that mean really? It means that when you tell a small lie, that is not about something important often because you are trying to be nice or kind, then it is a white lie. I’ll give you some examples tomorrow.

ネイティブストリートスラングビデオ: What’s up?! 最近どうよ?

今回で3回目となるネイティブストリートスラングビデオの新作を今日は紹介したいと思います。このシリーズでは英語を母国語として話すネイティブスピーカーが個々のお気に入りのスラングとその意味をビデオの中で説明してくれるといったものです。

第3回目のスラングビデオは、Sam (11才) とAriana (9才)のお気に入りのスラング“What’s up?”の紹介です。“What’s up? “は “How are you?”の代わりに使えるフレーズですが、もう少しカジュアルな響きで、”What has been happening in your life?”"What’s new?”(最近どうよ、何か(新しいこと)あった?)といった意味です。

ネイティブスピーカーは、この“What’s up?”を非常に良く使います。例えば、ルームメイトやクラスメイトと家や学校の廊下ですれちがった時などに、“What’s up?”(この場合は「おう!」といった感じで軽い挨拶です。)と言ったり、友達に「何か相談したいことがあるの…」と呼び出されて“What’s up?”(どうしたの?)と言えたりと、“What’s up?”は、海外で暮らしていると一日に何回も耳にするスラングなのです。

日本人が良くする間違いで、気を付けなければいけない点が、この質問への答え方です

“How are you?”と似ている意味だからといって”I’m fine.”などと答えるのは間違いです。“What’s up?”は、「元気?/調子はどう?」というニュアンスより「何か新しいことあった?」と言う意味が強いので下のように答えてみてください。 スラングなので目上の人やあまり親しくない人には使わないように注意しましょう!!

“Not much.” 、 “Nothing much.” 「う～ん。特に何にもないよ。」

“The usual.” 「特に何もなく、いつも通りだね。」

“Just working.” や “Just studying.”「ただ働いてる(勉強してる)。」など最近何をしているかを答える。

“What’s up?” 同じ質問を聞き返す。廊下などで友達とすれちがった時などは「おう!」と言った軽いニュアンスなので、A:「What’s up?」B:「What’s up?」と同じ質問を反復してそれだけで終わる場合もあります。

Ariana:            Hi I’m Ariana.
Sam:               And I’m Sam!
Ariana:            Our favorite slang is
Ariana & Sam: What’s up?
Sam:               You use it anytime you see someone you know.
What’s up *sis?
Ariana:           Nothing much *bro.
Sam:              Yeah!

アリアナ: こんにちは。アリアナです。

サム: そして、サムです!

アリアナ: 私たちのお気に入りのスラングは、

アリアナ&サム: “What’s up?”で～す。

サム: このスラングは知り合いの人と出会った時にいつでも使えます。やあ、最近どう?

アリアナ: 特に何もないわ。

サム: イエーイ!

*Sis: sister　妹、仲の良い女友達を呼ぶ時にも使えます。
*Bro: brother　弟、仲の良い男友達を呼ぶ時にも使えます。

英語には”Hi, how are you?”「やあ元気?」の他にも様々な挨拶の方法があります。来週のポストで紹介しますね。

英語バージョン

This time we have Sam (11) and Ariana (9) and they are demonstrating their favorite slang phrase: What’s up? You use What’s up? instead of How are you? It is very casual and means: What has been happening in your life? The usual answer is “Not much.” or “Nothing much.” or you could answer by saying: “The usual.” meaning that life has been usual. Or you could try explaining what’s going on in your life: “Just working.” or “Just studying.” are quite common.

In English there is no “one pattern” of greeting. There are many ways you can say “Hi, how are you?” and I will look at them next week.

Fuck the pain away (ミュージックビデオ)

これは”Fuck the Pain Away“と呼ばれるPeachesによるミュージックビデオです。体のパーツの英語スラング(“Titties“はTits(胸)、BehindはButt(おしり)のことです)に”fuck”と同じく注意しながら歌詞を聞いてみてください

もし彼女のようなタイプの音楽が好きなら、彼女のMyspace (日本でいうとMIXIみたいなものです) をチェックしてもっといっぱい下品な感じの音楽を楽しんでください(笑) 彼女のアルバムはImpeach my Bushと言います。ちなみに”bush”とは陰毛のことです!　それを歌にしちゃうなんて彼女はすごい

This is a music video by Peaches called “Fuck the Pain Away”. Listen out for some of our Bodies slang as well (“Titties” is the same as Tits, Behind is the same as “Butt”) as the fuck slang.

If you like her kind of music, you can see her Myspace page and listen to more dirty songs! Her album is called: Impeach my Bush (bush means pubic hair!). She’s great!

単語”fucking”の意味・使い方

最近では多くの人が”fucking”をどんなことに対しても使っており、日常語になりつつありますが、本来は、怒りやイラダチを強く表したいときに使用します。fuck/ﾌｧｯｸという言葉は人を傷付ける可能性があり、使ってはいけない場合も多々あることを忘れないで下さいね! それと、毎日使っていると普段からこの単語を使いすぎるとこの言葉の力や強さが弱まるので本気で使いたいときだけお使い下さい。

One use of fucking is as an intensifier showing that you are angry or annoyed, although recently many people use it as part of their everyday language talking about anything. Remember though that using fuck may offend some people and be completely inappropriate in some situations. Using it all the time lessens its strength so best to say it when you really mean it!

As an adjective:　形容詞として

What a fucking idiot!　なんてバカな!

As an adverb:　副詞として

Miki isn’t fucking interested in him!　ミキは彼なんかに全く(死ぬほど)興味ないのよ!

This video of the of the song called she’s so hot – boom and it is a good example of the English slang “hot” – which of course means sexy.

ビッチ！

これはSex and the Cityのショートクリップです。この中でサマンサはある女性をビッチ（a bitch）と呼んでいます。ビッチは女の人に対して使う呼び名で、その人にムカついていたり、怒りの感情があるときにその人の事をビッチと呼ぶことができます。

でもこれはすごく失礼で乱暴な言い方なので友だちやお母さん、会社のボスなどには使わないように

１．本来、Bitchとはメス犬のことを指します。　でも、今では怒りを込めて女の人を呼ぶ時のスラングとして使われています。（このビデオの中で使われているみたいに）

２．また、この単語は人使いの悪い、男性を困らせるような女性と言う意味もあります。ビッチである事を逆に誇りに思っている女性もたまにいるようです。そして“being a bitch”“ビッチでいる”事をジョークに使ったりもするようです。このように言えます。

“I was such a bitch to John last night.” 「昨晩ジョンを困らせちゃった」

３．最後に、文句を言いたい時、動詞のbitchが使えます。

“She was bitching me about being late.” 「彼女は私が遅刻した事に対して文句言ってくるの」

This is a Sex and the City (very short) clip and in it Samantha calls another woman a bitch. Bitch is a name we call women when we are angry or upset with them. It is rude, so don’t call your friend’s mother or your boss a bitch!

1. Bitch really means a female dog, but now has been adopted into slang to mean: a woman you are angry or annoyed with (like in the video here).

2. It can also mean a woman who treats people (especially men) badly – some women are proud of this and might joke about “being a bitch”.

“I was such a bitch to John last night.”

3. and finally as a verb “to bitch” means to complain.

“She was bitching me about being late.”
